A Sneak Peek Into The Bittancourt Housing Project
If you’ve driven north into Ganges or traveled to Fulford, you’ve likely noticed the Lady Minto Hospital Foundation’s healthcare workforce housing project at 101 Bittancourt Road. This initiative is creating 18 new affordable rental apartments specifically for healthcare workers, including health care aides, food service workers, nurses, housekeepers, and locum doctors. These homes will provide stable, long-term housing to help address one of the biggest challenges in delivering healthcare on Salt Spring Island.
The Bittancourt project includes a variety of affordable housing options designed to meet different needs. It features:
- 4 studio apartments, ideal for locum doctors, visiting staff, or single healthcare workers.
- 1 one-bedroom apartment.
- 6 one-bedroom plus den apartments, offering extra space for long-term comfort.
- 6 two-bedroom apartments and 1 three-bedroom, two-bath home for larger households and families.
The goal of this project is simple: to support the people who support us. Every healthcare worker on Salt Spring Island deserves a comfortable, sustainable place to call home. Each apartment will have a full kitchen, a three-piece bathroom, thoughtfully designed storage, and partial ocean views. From on-site laundry to private balconies, the features at 101 Bittancourt are designed to support long-term integration into the Salt Spring community.
With construction underway and zoning approved, the project is expected to be completed by Fall 2025. Homes will be offered to existing healthcare staff facing housing instability and will also serve as a recruitment tool to help fill more than 20 vacancies at Lady Minto Hospital.
The Lady Minto Hospital Foundation’s Bittancourt project is on track, but community support is still essential. In addition to this initiative, the Foundation has ongoing financial commitments, including funding vital hospital equipment. Reducing the project’s debt burden will not only help lower affordable rental rates, as defined by the BC Provincial Government, but also allow for additional amenities.
