A Home for Hospital Staff: Seabreeze Inne Reconstruction Enters Next Phase

By Eric Jacobsen

One of the greatest risks to the availability and quality of care at Lady Minto Hospital is our housing crisis. In the past two months, the hospital has lost critical support workers due to our housing shortage. Other hospital workers are struggling to remain, living in vehicles while they try to find a home.

This is why the Lady Minto Hospital Foundation, with generous support from donors and the community, acquired the former Seabreeze Inne on Bittancourt Road in 2022. The former hotel will be transformed into housing for hospital staff and healthcare workers. It will provide stable long-term rentals and a space for traveling healthcare workers, nurses, and locum doctors.

After initial  planning, securing approvals, and interior demolition, we’re thrilled to announce that the project planning and recruitment phase is set to commence. To ensure the success of this endeavor, we are seeking an experienced Construction Project Manager to lead the reconstruction efforts and are now inviting proposals from interested parties in contributing to this vital project. It takes time to run a project of this magnitude and hiring the Project Manager is a critical step that will be followed by a bid process for construction.

Upon completion, the Bittancourt housing project will offer 19 new, thoughtfully designed apartments targeted to healthcare workers. These new homes will help address the housing challenges faced by new and current staff, enhancing both retention and recruitment efforts.

We would like to thank our previous Executive Director Roberta Martell for her vision and energy that went into spearheading this project. We extend our deepest gratitude to our generous donors, supportive community members, local government partners, and dedicated volunteers who have brought us to this exciting stage.

Together, we’re building a stronger, more resilient healthcare system and community for generations to come. We invite you to join us on this journey. Learn more and see how you can contribute to the future of your healthcare on our website.
