What’s happening at Lady Minto?
While Lady Minto Hospital continues to work on its staffing model in anticipation of the new Emergency Department coming online later this year, it is still in need of a number of new staff, particularly for roles like health care aides. These roles serve as the backbone of the hospital, but the unaffordability of on-island housing can make securing accommodations for those workers incredibly challenging. Currently, nearly 40 positions at Lady Minto remain posted on Island Health’s Careers page, including roles in nursing, food service, lab tech, and maintenance.
The Foundation is working to meet these challenges head-on through our Housing Information Portal connecting property owners to hospital staff, as well as with the development of new staff housing on Bittancourt Road. Once completed, this project will supply 17 units of affordable, appropriate housing for hospital workers, making Lady Minto a viable option for more health care workers who may not have the salary to meet Salt Spring’s high market housing rates.
